Phuntsho Wangdi, Director General, BSB (Bhutan Standards Bureau) holds a degree in Civil Engineering from the Punjab Engineering College, India, and is one of the Board Directors of SARSO (the South Asian Regional Standards Organization) and currently IEC Affiliate Country Programme Leader.

Role of the Affiliate Leader

The IEC Affiliate Leader, i.e. an individual, not a country, is nominated by the IEC General Secretary to act as the affiliates’ collective voice with the IEC governing bodies. He was selected for his personality and not by virtue of its country of origin.

The Affiliate Secretariat, based at the IEC Central Office in Geneva, supports the Affiliate Leader in:

  • submitting comments or proposals from affiliates to the relevant IEC Technical Committees/Subcommittees during the standardization process;
  • identifying issues in the work of the IEC relevant to developing and newly industrializing countries;
  • seeking a common position for affiliates and communicate this position to the relevant technical or management committees;
  • conducting Dialogue sessions on the Programme.
